Project for Miera Iela (Miera Street), Riga
The brick buildings of this bohemian area around Miera Iela, full of charming cafes and shops, are the perfect background for my paintings. The decadent atmosphere surrounding the architecture in Miera Street emphasizes even more the inexorable passing of time, which is exorcised in my painting by the assiduous use of “difference and repetition” of the same shape.
While the architecture suffers passively the effects of time, by contrast, my paintings take possession of it, shape it, allowing the watcher to become active in this process, rather than just a passive, mostly unaware viewer.
The most famous traditional brewery in Riga (Labietis) and many other cafes are int his yard, and the place is a well known meeting point for “hipsters” and artists.
Last but not least: Miera is the latvian for “peace”.
